Is this a true story? It is true that this is a story. The above states a perspective on and within the architectural profession that declaring the truth is a so-called important component of practice. The practice of architecture could be seen as an on-going state of radical preservation. As each project begins from the ruins of a prior excavation, restoration can be exchanged for preservation. The authenticity of the work enclosed in this portfolio originates in and with stories, some of which are true, and some of which are authentic. Work here within varies greatly between the scales of the Astrodome, to the written word and graphic representations for a fairy tale. These scales demonstrate radical preservation as a tactile process that is both analogue and digital. Processes of this methodology reflects the use of nontraditional elements within preexisting conditions. An approach of this nature produces multiple vicissitudes unpredicted in the established category of preservation, and reestablished it as fertile ground for a new generation of architects. This work is at the forefront of such a generation beyond given conventions, acting as a catalyst for redefining the public’s perception of restoration into one of radical preservation. The stories, represented in these projects are the first step in a process to achieve this perception, and the authenticity of which is open to each reader. Authenticities in this portfolio begins in the written word, but are physically represented in the context of what can be considered true. |
